There are literally hundreds of different types of variations of foot mobilisation and manipulation techniques described in the literature. Patient position, practitioner position, hand/torso position and direction of force are some of the factors that can be modified. All the techniques below have been chosen for their relative simplicity, and require the patient to be lying prone on an examination couch. This is to enable the standing practitioner to easily access all joints of the foot without needing the patient to twist/move around. Take particular note of the practitioner hand/body positions in the examples below: correct technique is a vital aspect. The series of 10 mobilisations/manipulations below assumes that you will progress through each as listed for each limb. Once you have had some practice, this should only take about two minutes per foot. The instructions for each mobilisation/manipulation assumes you have 'average' sized hands and arms. If you are particularly large or small, the technique might need to be changed to accomodate this.
