Diagnostic Procedures
Visual inspect can provide vital clues to diagnosis
Sometimes further analysis is needed:
Biopsy
• Performed for histopathology study
• Punch
• Parallel incision (shave)
• Incisional biopsy
• Excisional biopsy
Patch testing • To confirm/identify allergy
Cultures and sensitivity
• Used to isolate and identify microoganisms
• Dermatophyte test medium
Potassium hydroxide technique (KOH)
• Commonly used for superficial fungal infections
• Skin or nail sample placed on microscope slide
Woods light
• Uses UV light - certain diseases fluoresce specific colours
