Osteomyelitis

Osteomyelitis is an infection of the bone which may occur via the blood stream or via direct innoculation (for example, puncture wounds and ulcers). The radiographic presentation varies from purely lytic processes to that of a small focal area of destruction surrounded by a dense sclerotic reaction. Plain radiographs are unreliable diagnostically for infection. The features identified below are indicative, but should be assessed in concert with the full clinical history of each patient. Each of the cases shown below could have a number of differential diagnoses including trauma, Charcot's or non-union. Diagnosis of osteomyelitis can only be confirmed with biopsy.
