Foot Manipulation

Foot manipulation is a treatment modality for improvement of mechanical malalignment of the foot. It involves physical manipulation of joints and regular follow up strengthening and stretching exercises by the patient. In some cases manipulation can supplement traditional treatment such as Orthotic therapy and surgical intervention.

The images below have been kindly provided by Claude Tobgui.

Pre and Post Manipulation X-Rays

The podiatrist has used the collum tali axis and 1st metatarsal axis as a reference point for analysing the sagittal plane alignment of the head and neck of the talus. The angle made by the collum tali axis and the second metatarsal axis is used as a reference point for analysing the tranverse plane alignment of the head and neck of the talus.

Pre manipulation

DP view- date- 30/01/20

Angle made by collum tali axis and 2nd met axis is 20 degrees

Talo-navicular joint space is irregular with narrowing of the medial portion of the joint.

Significant metatarsus primus adductus

Moderate Hallux-abducto-valgus without much arthritic change

5 months post manipulation

date- 15/06/01

Angle made by collum tali axis and 2nd met axis is -4 degrees (reduced by 24 degrees)

Opening of the medial portion of the talo-navicular joint

Reduction in 1st intermetatarsal angle

Reduction in hallux abductus angle
