Hallux Abducto Valgus (HAV)

An acquired triplane deformity of the first metatarsophalangeal joint in which the Hallux is abducted in the transverse plane, dorsiflexed in the sagittal plane and everted in the frontal plane. There will be varying amounts of abduction and valgus of the hallux, medial exostosis, the central toes may be clawed and abducted, there will be lesions under the second metatarsal head, medial side of the hallux IPJ, the dorsal surface of the second and fifth digits and there will be marked osteoarthritic symptoms.

HAV - Stage 1 :

 
 

This stage is characterised by lateral displacement of the proximal phalanx relative to the first metatarsal.
