Ankylosing Spondylitis

Bilateral and symmetric distribution is characteristic. In the rearfoot, the calcaneus is the most prominent site of involvement. Radiologically, osteoporosis becomes evident once the disease has reached a debilitating nature. Also in the foot there maybe mild diffuse joint space narrowing, small erosions and adjacent bone proliferation. Posterior calcaneal erosions and enthescopathy are often seen. Bony ankylosis is common in synovial joints of the foot. Periostitis causes a shaggy periarticular osseous appearance.
