1. The name of the Society
shall be The La Trobe University Physics Society.
2. All members of the
University are eligible to join the Society.
3. The Club Committee of the
Society may invite other interested persons to become members.
4. The object of the Society
shall be to:
invite speakers to the
University to lecture on subjects in the field of physics; arrange
visits to industrial plants, research laboratories and the like;
organise social events such as luncheons, Christmas party, film
shows, and so forth; and generally to provide a means of informal
contact between all persons associated with the teaching and study
of physics at this university.
5. The Club Committee may
recommend to a General Meeting of Club Members that a subscription
fee be charged: such subscription being a pre-requisite to membership
of the Club.
6. The Club Committee shall
number up to nine (9) members and shall comprise: President, Honorary
Secretary, Honorary Treasurer, Clubs and Society delegate, Academic
staff representative, representative from each year level (with
honours year and postgraduate students sharing a representative), and
other such officers as the committee shall determine necessary. Such
Committee will be elected at the Annual General Meeting of the
Society.
7. Committee Meetings are to be
held at such time and place as decided from time to time by the
committee; but not less than once per term.
8. The quorum for Committee
meetings is to consist of four (4) members.
9. Cheques and cash withdrawals
on the Society's bank account must be signed for by two (2) of the
following - The President, Honorary Secretary, or Honorary Treasurer.
10. An Annual General Meeting
shall be held early in the first term of the academic year, at which
time the Members of the Society Committee are to be elected, and an
annual report presented.
11. A Special General Meeting
may be called by the President and Honorary Secretary in conference
or on a signed requisition by ten (10) members setting out the
purpose for which such meeting is to be called.
12. Seven (7) days notice shall
be given of an Annual General Meeting, a General Meeting or a
proposal to amend this constitution. Such notice shall be by
prominent display on the notice boards of the Physics Department and
teaching laboratories of this University and by written notice to
those invited to become members under the provisions of Article 3 of
this Constitution.
13. The quorum for a General
Meeting is to consist of ten (10) percent of financial members which
must be at least seven (7) such members.
14. Decision of an Annual
General Meeting, a General Meeting, or on an amendment to the
Constitution (all other requirements being fulfilled) shall be by a
two thirds vote of financial members.
15. A Financial member is a
person having paid the required subscription to remain as such a
financial member until the conclusion of the next Annual General
Meeting in the following year.
16. The President or
(substitute) Chairman of a Meeting shall have a casting vote as well
as a deliberate vote.
17. Every member undertakes to
contribute to the assets of the Society in the event of the same
being wound up during the time at which he is a member, should such
assets be insufficient to meet any liabilities existing at the said
time.
18. This Society is affiliated
with the Clubs and Societies Council of La Trobe University, and
anything in this Constitution which conflicts with the Constitution
of that Council shall be null and void. In all matters not
specifically dealt with here, the Constitution and Regulations of the
Clubs and Societies Council shall apply.
