Master of Sports Physiotherapy

The School of Physiotherapy at La Trobe University has run postgraduate programs in Sports Physiotherapy since 1983. The high standard of physiotherapy education within the School is reflected in its reputation for excellence.

Sports Physiotherapist Title (Australian Physiotherapy Association)
Graduate physiotherapists from this course develop advanced clinical skills in Sports Physiotherapy which meet the eligibility requirements for graduates to apply to use the title “Sports Physiotherapist” from the Australian Physiotherapy Association.

Course Structure
The Master of Sports Physiotherapy involves the successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Sports Physiotherapy followed by three subjects that make up the Master of Sports Physiotherapy. These subjects can be undertaken over one or two years and the course has been designed to allow students to concurrently maintain some clinical consulting.

Subjects within the course
The Master of Sports Physiotherapy course requires satisfactory completion of 120 credit points (cp) of study, of which 60 comprise the subjects included in the Graduate Certificate in Sports Physiotherapy. The remaining 60 credit points are gained by the completion of three subjects that teach advanced clinical practice as well as expert clinical reasoning, manual handling and exercise prescription within an evidence based practice framework.

The subjects for “Graduate Certificate in Sports Physiotherapy” are :

  • PTY5LSE Literature searching and evaluation (20cp)
  • PTY5PDS Professional development in sports physiotherapy (30cp)
  • PTY5PSM Physiology for sports and musculoskeletal physiotherapists (10cp)

The subjects for “Master of Sports Physiotherapy” are :

  • PTY5CRM Clinical reasoning and manual therapy (20cp)
  • PTY5APS Advanced practice of sports physiotherapy (30cp)
  • PTY5SSP Level 3 Sports physiotherapy course (10cp)

Admission Requirements
Applications must have completed the Graduate Certificate in Sports Physiotherapy with at least a B grade average and have at least one year of clinical experience in the sports physiotherapy field. All applicants must be eligible to register to practise as a physiotherapist in Australia.

Fees
The Master of Sports Physiotherapy is a fee-paying course. Students are also required to pay the University’s General Service Fee.

Allocation of Places
The following will be considered by the Selection Committee in the assessment of applications :

  • Qualifications and academic record.
  • Completion of relevant professional development courses.
  • Previous and current sports physiotherapy team involvement.
  • Employment record including general physiotherapy experience and experience in sports and musculoskeletal physiotherapy.
  • Professional affiliations.
  • Reasons for wishing to do the course.
  • Referees’ reports.
  • Postgraduate activity such as research, publications and teaching.

School Facilities
The School of Physiotherapy is located in the Health Sciences 3 building on the Bundoora Campus of La Trobe University. Students have opportunities to see and use the following:

  • Access to on-line journals and on-line library facilities.
  • Up-to-date information technology services including computer teaching laboratories and on-line teaching facilities.
  • State of the art lecture, practical, and clinical teaching facilities.
  • Modern, well equipped research laboratories including one of the most advanced movement laboratories in the world, a high class electrophysical agents laboratory, and biomechanics facilities.
  • Modern library with one of the most extensive collections of physiotherapy books and serials, and advanced on-line searching facilities, and inter-library loan.

Teaching Staff
The Master of Sports Physiotherapy is taught by La Trobe University staff and a wide range of outside experts. Staff involved with the course have high-level qualifications, extensive clinical experience, and have been recognised internationally for their work.
