Master of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy

This course is offered to local fee paying students only. 

The School of Physiotherapy at La Trobe University has run postgraduate programs in Musculoskeletal (Manipulative) Physiotherapy since 1982. The high standard of physiotherapy education within the School is reflected in its reputation for excellence, both within Australia and internationally.

This course provides graduate physiotherapists with an opportunity to develop advanced clinical skills in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy and aims to establish a standard of advanced clinical work and theory to meet the eligibility requirements for titled 2 membership of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Australia, a national special group of the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA).

Course Structure
The Master of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy course requires satisfactory completion of 120 credit points (cp) of study, of which 60 comprise the subjects included in the Graduate Certificate in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy. The remaining 60 credit points are gained by the completion of two subjects that teach advanced clinical practice as well as expert clinical reasoning, manual handling and exercise prescription within an evidence based practice framework. The part-time nature of the course limits it to fee paying local students only.

The subjects are :

  • PTY5LSE Literature searching and evaluation * (20cp)
  • PTY5PDM Professional development in musculoskeletal physiotherapy * (30cp)
  • PTY5PSM Physiology for sports and musculoskeletal physiotherapists * (10cp)
  • PTY5CRM Clinical reasoning and manual therapy (20cp)
  • PTY5APM Advanced practice of musculoskeletal physiotherapy (40cp)

* Subjects completed in Graduate Certificate.

Admission Requirements
Applicants must have completed the Graduate Certificate in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy with at least a B grade course weighted average mean (WAM) and have at least one year of clinical experience in the musculoskeletal field. All applicants must be eligible to register to practise as a physiotherapist in Australia.

Fees
The Master of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy is a fee-paying course. Students are required to pay the University’s General Service Fee.

Allocation of Places
The following will be considered by the Selection Committee in the assessment of applications :

  • Qualifications and academic record.
  • Completion of relevant professional development courses.
  • Employment record including general physiotherapy experience and experience in manipulative and musculoskeletal physiotherapy.
  • Reasons for wishing to do the course.

School Facilities
The School of Physiotherapy is located in the Health Sciences 3 building on the Bundoora Campus of La Trobe University. The building is purpose built (opened in 1998) and facilities include technologically advanced equipment. Students have opportunities to observe and use the following:

  • Up-to-date information technology services including computer teaching laboratories and on-line teaching facilities.
  • State of the art lecture, practical, and clinical teaching facilities.
  • Modern, well equipped research laboratories including one of the most advanced movement laboratories in the world, a high class electrophysical agents laboratory, and biomechanics facilities.
  • A modern anatomy dissection laboratory.
  • Modern library with one of the most extensive collections of physiotherapy books and serials, and advanced on-line searching facilities.

Teaching Staff
The Master of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy is taught by La Trobe University staff and a wide range of outside experts. The teaching staff includes musculoskeletal physiotherapists, orthopaedic surgeons, rheumatologists, neurologists, radiologists, biomechanists, anatomists, and exercise physiologists. Staff involved with the course have high-level qualifications, extensive clinical experience, and have been recognised internationally for their work.

Graduate Outcomes
Graduates of the Master of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy will have expertise that can be applied to a range of conditions in people of all ages. Graduates are highly sought after for employment in private practice, hospitals, rehabilitation centres, community health settings, industrial health clinics, and for teaching and academic appointments. Graduates are employed on the basis of their advanced level of skill and state of the art knowledge.

Graduates of the Master of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy are automatically eligible for membership of the Manipulative Physiotherapists’ Association of Australia, a national special group of the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA). They are eligible to use the title “Manipulative Physiotherapist”.
