Graduate Certificate in Sports Physiotherapy
This course is offered to local fee paying students only.
The School of Physiotherapy at La Trobe University has run postgraduate programs in Sports Physiotherapy since 1983 and attracts students from around Australia. The high standard of physiotherapy education within the School is reflected in its reputation for excellence.
The aims of this course are to provide an opportunity for graduate physiotherapists to develop advanced theoretical and applied skills in Sports Physiotherapy and to develop skills in the critical evaluation of the scientific literature and research design.
Subjects within the course
The Graduate Certificate in Sports Physiotherapy course requires completion of 60 credit points (cp) of study. This consists of three prescribed subjects : PTY5PDS; PTY5PSM and PTY5LSE.
- PTY5LSE Literature searching and evaluation (20cp)
- PTY5PDS Professional development in sports physiotherapy (30cp)
- PTY5PSM Physiology for sports and musculoskeletal physiotherapists (10cp)
PTY5PDS requires the completion of 104 hours of accredited continuing education courses run by the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) or Sports Medicine Australia (SMA) or other organisations. Credit for courses will be considered on submission of relevant content, learning goals and completion of specified assessment tasks. And be aware that a maximum of 20 hours is credited for any course or conference regardless of actual length. Mandatory courses include the APA Spinal 1 course (if available in your state) as well as the APA level 1 and 2 sports courses. The subjects PTY5PSM and PTY5LSE are undertaken on-line. The intent of the Graduate Certificate course is to allow physiotherapists to undertake further education in their own time with minimal disruption to their work.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Physiotherapy degree or equivalent for admission into the Graduate Certificate. Applicants should be eligible for registration to work as a physiotherapist in Australia.

The Graduate Certificate in Sports Physiotherapy is a fee-paying course.

- Qualifications and academic record.
- Completion of relevant professional development courses.
- Employment record including general physiotherapy experience and experience in manipulative and musculoskeletal physiotherapy.
- Professional affiliations.
- Reasons for wishing to do the course.
- Referees’ reports.
School Facilities
The School of Physiotherapy is located in the Health Sciences 3 building on the Bundoora Campus of La Trobe University. The building is purpose built (opened in 1998) and facilities include technologically advanced equipment. Students have opportunities to use the following:
- Up-to-date information technology services including computer teaching laboratories and on-line teaching facilities.
- Modern library with one of the most extensive collections of physiotherapy books and serials, and advanced on-line searching facilities.
Teaching Staff
The Graduate Certificate in Sports Physiotherapy is taught by La Trobe University staff and a range of outside experts. Staff involved with the course have high-level qualifications, extensive clinical experience, and have been recognised internationally for their work.
