Research

The Department hosts an energetic research team with a strong international reputation and extensive instrumentation for experimental physics.

We have a strong focus on Condensed Matter Physics: La Trobe University continues to be awarded high ratings in this field during the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) national research assessment.

Research themes and specialisations

Functional materials and surface science

Our interests span the fundamental electronic properties of emerging materials, the characterisation of technologically important surfaces and nanomaterials, and their application to quantum devices, biosensing and drug delivery.

Space science

Conducting research into the near-earth environment including the lower and upper atmosphere, magnetosphere and the Earth's magnetic field.

X-ray science

We study the coherent properties of X-rays, the interaction of X-rays with matter and their application to imaging, using a range of synchrotron and laboratory-based X-ray sources.

Research centres

The Department hosts the Centre for Materials and Surface Science, is a member of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coherent X-Ray Science, and plays a role in several other internationally recognised research centres and institutes.

Honours and postgraduate research

We offer research opportunities and training to students in a world-class condensed matter physics program specialising in the areas of functional materials and surface physics, nanophysics and X-ray physics.

Facilities

The Department hosts several world-class laboratories housed both at La Trobe University and at external facilities. We maintain an extensive capability in the design and manufacture of specialist instrumentation.
