Jobs in Physics
Post-doctoral Research Associate
Full-time, fixed-term (Level A) position
Closing Date: 11 January 2008
The Department of Physics at La Trobe University is commencing a new program of research in the development of carbon-based quantum electronic materials. We are currently seeking a Post Doctoral Researcher to work on atomic-scale studies of the surface of diamond, particularly relating to the introduction of surface-trapped molecules as a method of inducing a two-dimensional charged system to the underlying surface layer. The position will involve predominantly scanning probe microscopy experiments in an ultra-high vacuum environment. This program is supported by well-equipped nanoscience laboratories at La Trobe University and facilities at the Australian Synchrotron.
You will have, or be near completion of, a PhD in Physics or a related discipline, and possess experience in experimental techniques requiring ultra-high vacuum. Demonstrated expertise in scanning probe microscopy and surface spectroscopic techniques are desirable, but not essential.
Remuneration package of $67,578 to $72,540 per annum, which includes 17% employer superannuation.

Closing Date: 3 August 2007
The Department of Physics is seeking to appoint a full time fixed term Associate Lecturer/Lecturer for the years 2008 to 2010. The incumbent should have experience in Space Physics. Current Department interests in Space Physics are Solar-Terrestrial Physics and Space Plasma Physics but the preference will be given to those with experience in magnetospheric and ionospheric physics. Experimental facilities include the TIGER SuperDARN radars, ionosondes and optical spectrometers in Australia and Antarctica.
Remuneration package of Associate Lecturer
$53,453 to $72,540
or Lecturer $76,360 to $90,677 per annum which includes 17% superannuation.
Position no: 50020427

Lecturer / Senior Lecturer
2 Full-time, continuing positions
Closing Date: 8 September 2006
The Department of Physics is seeking to appoint two full time Lecturers/Senior Lecturers with experience in one of the research areas in which the department has strong research programs, Space Physics, Surface and Materials Science or X-ray optics. Excellent opportunities exist for new staff interested in teaching and the development of research congruent with existing programs.
The research emphasis in Space Physics is in solar terrestrial physics and experimental facilities include the TIGER SuperDARN radars, ionospheric radars and optical spectrometers in Australia and Antarctica, and FedSat.
In Materials and Surface Science experimental programs include studies of the electronic states in conducting materials, the structure of surfaces, the formation of low dimensional structures, magnetic thin film devices, studies in polymers and semiconductor surface science, micro-contact printing and bio-diagnostic devices. The research is supported by state of the art imaging XPS, TOFSIMS, III-V and metals MBE, scanning probe technologies and with an angle resolving electron spectrometer at the Berlin Synchrotron.
In x-ray optics current research activities include, microfabrication of x-ray optics, x-ray phase imaging and tomography and coherent diffractive imaging. The research is conducted using our high resolution x-ray microscopy facility and at synchrotron facilities worldwide and, soon, at the Australian Synchrotron. A major component of the research involves interactions with the biological sciences and this is a theme of our collaboration within the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Coherent X-ray Science.
Remuneration package of Lecturer $63,364 to $75,245 or Senior Lecturer $77,619 to $89,501 per annum, plus 17% employer superannuation.
