Philosophy Program

Postgraduate Studies

Philosophy offers the following Postgraduate Degrees:

The Philosophy Program at La Trobe University is in a position to offer supervision for postgraduate research over a very wide range of topics within the discipline (see staff research interests).

Staff are also interested in various individual philosophers. Those with an interest in working on the ideas of a particular philosopher should enquire about the capacity of staff in the Program to supervise such work.

Many of La Trobe's postgraduates go on to secure academic positions in Australia and abroad.

We are presently able to offer postgraduate students the following support:

  • Supervision by two academic staff members who are committed to being available for frequent consultation.
  • Access to a computer with internet connection, full professional support and access to a notebook computer for conference travel.
  • Own desk in shared room within the Philosophy area.
  • Funding for research support, including conference travel, language classes or other specialist training that may be required by the research project.
  • Teaching experience.
  • An unlimited publication award of $500 per paper or book chapter published while at La Trobe (DETYA scored publications only).
  • Excellent Library facilities.
  • An extremely active, friendly and supportive postgraduate group who run their own weekly research seminar (with the occasional film night).
  • Postgraduates are encouraged to attend the weekly Philosophy seminar and to make full use of the common room.
