SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE - Closes August 30th

Environmental Culture and Sustainability Post-Graduate Research Program

Description:  This program is designed to encourage research that critically examines cultural, political and social values and considers how these values must change in order to cope with radically changing social, environmental and development realities.  The program is available to students who wish to focus their post-graduate research on specific environmental or sustainability topics or who wish to bring an environmental or sustainability perspective to more traditional research topics in the humanities and social sciences.

Students will be able enter the program from any area of the humanities or social sciences, but will be expected to gain literacy in environmental ethics and sustainability politics in the course of their studies. Examples of subject areas in which students might elect to work are philosophy of nature and history of ideas; human/animal relationships; human/land relationships; environmental utopias; environmental activism; dynamics of political and social change; ecology and literature; ecology and religion; ecology and art; environmental history; ecopsychology; ecocosmology; history of consciousness.

Structure:  The Program is coordinated and administered by the Philosophy Program but it is available to any research student in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science. It provides panel supervision for a Masters or PhD by research with relevant supervisors drawn from across the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Reading and research seminars will afford grounding in the core discourses of environmental ethics and sustainability politics.

Administration:  the program is co-directed by Associate Professor Janna Thompson and Associate Professor Freya Mathews from the Philosophy Program.
