Research specialisations
Pharmacy practice
The focus of pharmacy practice research is the use of medicines in any setting. This includes patients' perspective of their medication, effectiveness of treatment, pharmacists' role in the use of medicines and pharmaceutical care. Other focuses are pharmacy education and influences on place of practice.
Our research in this specialisation focuses on the following areas:
Bioidentical hormone therapy
Investigating products that contain endogenous hormones.
Professional practice
Examining issues that can impact pharmacists' roles as health professionals.
Quality use of medicines
Evidence based prescribing, medication safety, and the impact of medication on consumers' lives.
Rural workforce
Investigating the difficulties involved in attracting health professionals to rural areas.
Biotechnology
Our research is focused on developing new ways to improve human health through better understanding how genes influence people's responses to medicines. We are also working on new ways of controlling harmful bacteria through the use of bacteriophages, and how microorganisms can be used to produce new medicines and other useful biocomponds.
Our research in this specialisation focuses on the following areas:
Carotenoid biochemistry
Carotenoids are becoming of increasing importance as therapeutic agents in the treatment of skin conditions.
Genomics, DNA sequencing and bioinformatics
We examine novel bacteriophages for biocontrol of problematic bacteria in both the environment and clinic.
Pharmacogenomics
Current research areas include pharmacogenetics, microbial resistance to chemotherapeutic agents and disease control.
Environmental chemistry

Research in the Colloid Environmental Chemistry lab focuses on trying to understand surface and transport phenomena that control the distribution of toxic organic and inorganic chemicals in the environment. These chemicals include heavy metals, pharmaceutical agents, herbicides and pesticides.
Colloid and environmental chemistry
This lab seeks to understand those surface phenomena that are responsible for the retention and transport of toxic organic and inorganic chemical species through the environment.
Medicinal chemistry and biomedical science
This field of research focuses on drug interactions at the molecular level, in an effort to better understand and enhance the potential uses and effects of various treatments, procedures and medicines.
Muscle physiology and pharmacology
We investigate calcium dynamics, 5-HT receptors, cardiac cells and drug interactions.
Neural integration and neural networks
Our lab has a diverse set of research projects, all with a molecular basis and an emphasis on drug structure and application.
Neural physiology and pharmacology
My area of research is neurophysiology/pharmacology - currently the dopaminergic relationship with respect to controlling behaviours.
Organic, pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry
My research involves DNA-dependent protein kinase and Novel Substituted Quinazolinones.
Radio and chemo sensitisers
Our lab uses chemo- and radio- sensitizers to enhance the effectiveness of standard chemotherapy and radiotherapy in cancer treatment.
