Occupational Health and SafetyWorkplace safety is a high priority in the School of Pharmacy and Applied Science. The Supervisor of each work unit conducts regular workplace safety inspections to confirm that agreed safety procedures are being followed, identify any safety hazards, and determine training needs within their unit. Specific hazards are recorded in a hazard register which is kept in the work units' personalised Laboratory Safety Manuals. Risk assessments are conducted to determine the best way to reduce the risks associate with each hazard. A Material Safety Date Sheet (MSDS) must be obtained prior to the purchase or use or of any Dangerous Goods or Hazardous Substances. The MSDS is then used to complete a Preliminary Chemical Risk Assessment Form and where necessary a C5 Chemical Risk Assessment form. These documents are kept in a labelled folder in the lab where the chemical is stored or may be downloaded from this page. For activities that involve the use of hazardous processes or equipment, a Process Risk Assessment form is completed. For assistance, contact the OH&S Officer. The school produces its own OH&S Guidelines (see at right) to assist staff and postgraduate students to understand the systems in place, and their obligations to maintaining a safe work environment. A separate set of guidelines (see at right) is available for undergraduate students. A copy of the appropriate manual is issued to every new staff member or student on induction.
