Peace Studies
Undergraduate Studies
Peace Studies is recognised as a core discipline for the purposes of satisfying the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts (ABA) degree in social sciences. Apart from taking a major in Peace Studies, students may add the core and approved Peace Studies subjects to their degree.
The core unit Politics POL 2/3 PAC ‘Peace and Change’ may be taken independently of a Peace Studies major, it is compulsory for any student intending to major in Peace Studies. It is designed to introduce students to the field of peace and conflict studies. The core unit covers a broad range of issues including historical problems of war and peace, aggression, security (including economic and environmental security) and world order, peace and values (including Christian, feminist and Gandhian), civil disobedience, conflict resolution, peace activists and peace activism. In short, the focus of ‘Peace and Change’ on making and maintaining peace takes up the broad challenge of looking at ways to reduce violence and create a peaceful and just world. It goes far beyond a mere analysis of the problem of war, and the central focus is the individual rather than the state (the main concern of the discipline of International Relations).
While there are no specific first year requirement (students may take any two first year units in Politics, Sociology, Legal Studies, History or Philosophy), students are recommended to take Politics POL 1 SNS ‘States, Nations and Security’ and Politics POL 1 EEH “Economy, Environment and Human Rights’.
The remainder of the major can be made up by selecting from a list of subjects approved for inclusion in a Peace Studies sequence. The choice of these subjects can be made in a way that advances career goals. For example, those wishing to work in international aid may choose subjects dealing with colonialism and discrimination, while those wanting to work in diplomacy may prefer subjects with a greater emphasis on international relations.
A major in Peace Studies consists of 130 credit points of Peace Studies approved subjects (including the core unit). A major will include at least 30 credit points at first year level and at least 40 credit points at second year level and at least 60 credit points at third year level.
