Regular Voluntary Contributions (pre-tax)

The University offers employees the option to salary sacrifice regular voluntary contributions into UniSuper (pre-tax).

In taking this option employee should be aware of the following:

  1. A contributions tax will be deducted by UniSuper. It is the employee's responsibility to monitor the sacrificed contributions made on their behalf with respect to the concessional taxation regulations. The proposal in the 2009 Federal Budget (legislation to be passed) stated that from 1 July 2009, salary sacrifice superannuation contributions to a super fund will be limited to the concessional tax of 15% on salary sacrificed contributions to $25,000 per annum. If aged over 50 at that date, a higher limit of $50,000 applies to June 2012. After this time, affected persons will revert to a $25,000 cap (or the applicable indexed amount). Further information is available on the UniSuper website - www.unisuper.com.au Please note that the limits mentioned are made up of employer contributions and employee's salary sacrificed contributions. Defined Benefit members may have different contribution limits according to the Notional Taxed Contribution rate. UniSuper should be contacted to obtain this rate.

  3. Pre-tax superannuation contributions are not eligible for the Government Superannuation Co-contribution scheme.
  4. Benefits arising from these pre-tax contributions will be subject to preservation requirements and, when paid, will not be treated as undeducted contributions.
  5. In the event of changes to legislation relating to superannuation and/or taxation that would impact on the University and/or its employees, the University reserves the right to renegotiate or terminate these arrangements in which case the employee's salary will be restored to the full level. Employees will be required to either discontinue or resume payment of these contributions after tax.

Lump Sum Performance Payment in Superannuation

The Australian Tax Office requirement for an effective salary package arrangement for current year performance payments and future performance payments is that the arrangement must be entered into prior to the date of the employee's performance review or prior to the University's determination of the amount of any performance payment for the employee.

To ensure that this requirement is met, the employee must complete the form available on the web http://www.latrobe.edu.au/hr/forms/pre-tax-salary-deduction.htm (Additional Lump Sum Payment into Superannuation) and return to People and Culture prior to the determination of performance amounts. This form will then remain in People and Culture for future potential performance payments that the employee may receive. The form is only to be used by employees whose contract of employment provides for a possible performance payment, or who may in some way become entitled to an additional lump sum payment and who wish to sacrifice all of that payment into UniSuper.
