Conjoint Appointment

What is a Conjoint Appointment?

Conjoint Appointment - is an appointment between La Trobe University and another organisation. There is one single employer, either La Trobe University or the other organisation. The status of the appointee as a La Trobe University staff member remains the same whether they are employed by La Trobe University or the other organisation.

Advantages of conjoint appointments to La Trobe University :

  • The ability to attract and retain candidates of the highest calibre in both clinical service delivery and academic standing.
  • By conjointly appointing senior staff, more junior staff and trainees are attracted to a clinical setting where their further training is assured from both clinical and academic perspectives.
  • Health service standards and availability of clinicians in specialist areas are more likely to be ensured if appointments are linked to academic departments.
  • There is an explicit link between quality of clinical care and the academically derived evidence base for that case.
  • Health and nursing research outputs may be enhanced through the increased collaboration of clinical, scientific and epidemiological researchers.
  • Research income and publications output may be channelled through La Trobe University thereby potentially attracting supplementary Commonwealth funding through such schemes as the Institutional Grants Scheme, Research Training Scheme and the Research Infrastructure Block Grant Scheme.

Advantages to candidate:

  • As a member of both organisations, with both responsibilities and rights within each, the appointee can contribute to and gain from both organisations.
  • In academic areas, the appointee may supervise students, teach units (subjects) in Faculty of Health Science courses and/or undertake supervision of Research Higher Degree Candidates.
  • Members of staff have full membership of both the other organisation and the school
  • The ability of the candidate to progress their career in both clinical service areas and academic areas simultaneously.

Conjoint v Honorary Appointments

Honorary appointments are upon invitation, with no remuneration. Honorary appointees are not eligible for Commonwealth Research Training and Research Performance Funds through the University.

Honorary Associates are appointed as members of the Faculty and will be listed in the Annual Report and other relevant Faculty documents, but Honorary Affiliates do not enjoy this privilege. Both forms of appointment are entitled to use the facilities available to the academic staff of the Faculty, including the general access computer laboratory and other specialist facilities, subject to negotiation with the relevant Head of School/Division/Centre. Access to the University's library facilities is also provided.

An Honorary member of staff of the University shall not participate whether as a voter or as a candidate for election in any election held under the statutes and regulations unless otherwise qualified to participate; or serve as a member of the Academic Board or a Faculty Board; or act as principal supervisor of a candidate undertaking studies for any postgraduate award under the statutes and regulations, but may be appointed as a co-supervisor or Associate Supervisor.
