Occupational Health and Safety Training Program 2009

The Occupational Health and Safety Section co-ordinates a training program to support the health and safety programs in Faculties and Divisions.

All persons who want to attend a training course must arrange a booking via Ms Lyn Tang, who can be contacted on 9479 3265 or e-mail: lyn.tang@latrobe.edu.au

The OH&S Section does not charge an attendance fee unless otherwise indicated.

Induction for New Staff

Occupational health and safety induction for new staff is coordinated through the Division of Human Resources and is part of a comprehensive orientation program. For more information or to arrange a booking, visit the HR Website at http://www.latrobe.edu.au/hr/orientation/

About the One Day OHS Course

The aim of the course is to provide participants with an overview of occupational health and safety concepts and an understanding of risk control measures. The course covers occupational health and safety legislation; hazard management and risk assessments; University committees, policies and procedures; and strategies to manage health and safety.

About the Five Day OHS Course

The aim of the course is to provide an in-depth understanding of occupational health and safety legislation, hazard management and control, incident investigation, health and safety committees and communication of health and safety issues. The course covers the topics included in the one day course and includes on-site practical work.

About the Emergency Preparedness for Wardens Course

The aim of the two hour course on emergency evacuations is to introduce building and floor wardens and other staff who have responsibilities in an emergency to the nature and types of emergencies for which evacuations are carried out and the procedures to carry out an evacuation. The course covers:

  • Types of emergencies
  • The University experience
  • The University emergency response plan
  • Emergency and non-emergency procedures

About the Fire Extinguisher Training Course

The aim of the half day course is to provide participants with the nature of fires and how to extinguish them. The course includes practical experience using fire extinguishers and hose reels and covers the following:

  • The fire tetrahedron and fire classification
  • methods of fire extinction,
  • Fire extinguishers and their use

This course is suitable for:

  • Lab technicians
  • Resident assistants

About the Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus Course

The aim of the half day course is to provide designated staff with an understanding of the safe operation of self-contained breathing apparatus and procedures to follow in an emergency.

Note: The course requires participants to undergo a medical examination and includes practical work whilst using SCBA.

The aim of the two hour course on laboratory safety is to introduce students to the dangers in the research laboratory and to raise the profile of laboratory safety. The University accident experience is used to highlight the dangers and methods of control.

About the Radiation Safety Course

The aim of the half day course is to provide new staff and students with the background to safely use radioisotopes in the laboratory. The course covers:

  • Introduction to ionising radiation concepts and units
  • Protection from external and internal hazards
  • Radiobiology, dosimetry and dose limits
  • Legal requirements and responsibilities
  • Procedures for the storage, use, transport and disposal of radioisotopes

About the Hearing Conservation Course

The aim of the two hour course is to provide staff and students with an understanding of the hazards associated with excessive noise levels and the means to control exposures. The course covers the effects of noise; reducing noise exposure; hearing protection; regulations; and noise assessment and control procedures
