The Fourth International Outdoor Education Research Conference will be hosted by the Centre for Excellence in Outdoor and Environmental Educaiton at La Trobe University and held at the Beechworth campus in north-eastern Victoria . The conference will build on the three previous conferences held at Buckinghamshire-Chilterns University (UK) in 2002, La Trobe University ( Australia ) in 2004, and the University of Central Lancashire (UK) in 2006, and continue to promote and foster an international community of researchers whose work critically examines outdoor education theory and practice.
The conference will be structured around paper or poster presentations and discussion forums. Special interest group meetings and excursions to local outdoor environments will also be offered.
Call for papers
Abstracts are invited for the 4th International Outdoor Education Research Conference. The conference will build on the three previous International Outdoor Education Research Conferences where the focus has been on engaging with a greater variety of theoretical and critical approaches to outdoor education research than have traditionally been associated with the field. This conference offers researchers and scholars an opportunity to present and discuss their work in a truly international forum.
Abstracts for papers and posters may be on any topic relevant to outdoor education research and scholarship and may deploy any disciplinary or methodological perspectives appropriate to the topic. However, work that examines the social and cultural dimensions of outdoor education is particularly encouraged. Scholarly critiques of existing research or theory are also welcome. Works in progress will be acceptable.
The organisers will schedule papers according to themes which emerge from the presentations offered. Sessions will be reserved for postgraduate student papers.
Although general submissions are not required to address a particular conference theme, abstracts are also invited for reflective papers that take stock of the achievements of outdoor education research, critique its progress, and discuss current and/or emerging challenges. Presentations on the topic of “taking stock” will be programmed throughout the conference; organisers will select papers for this thread based on the quality of the abstract and the desirability of presenting a range of perspectives from different nations and regions.
Presentation formats
This conference will follow the format of previous research conferences. Research can be presented either as an oral or a poster presentation.
Oral presentations will take the form of a 20-minute presentation followed by 10 minutes of discussion. Poster presentations will be on display throughout the conference and authors will have the opportunity to give a five-minute presentation of their work followed by questions at a designated time during the conference.
All presenters must register to participate in the conference.
Abstract submission & format
Abstracts outlining the presentation should be submitted as an attachment to: ioerc2009@ latrobe.edu.au with IOEC2009Abstract<AuthorsName> in the subject line.
The abstract should be no more than 250 words, and must include the author's name(s), organisation, contact address, telephone and email address along with the title of the proposed paper. Authors must highlight their presentation's relevance to research in outdoor education and allied fields. Abstracts and papers must conform to APA format.
All abstracts must be submitted by 31 October 2008. Late submissions will be considered in order of receipt. The organisers will not guarantee that late papers will (a) be accepted for the conference or (b) be peer reviewed.
Review process
All abstracts and papers will be peer reviewed by the academic committee or referees nominated by the committee. Acceptance of abstracts will be notified by 30 November 2008. Posters will be accepted at conference registration. Notification of full paper reviews will occur following the conference. All abstracts and papers submitted to the conference committee and accepted will be published in proceedings following the conference.
Authors wishing to have their paper peer reviewed and included in these proceedings must submit the full paper by 5 May 2009. Earlier submission is welcomed.
