Handbook Entry -

The Graduate Certificate in Outdoor and Environmental Education provides a professional qualification for graduates in any discipline who have some prior outdoor education experience. Current students in the Centre for Excellence in Outdoor Environmental Education can also enroll in the course once they have completed half their undergraduate degree. Successful applicants can add depth and breadth to their disciplinary knowledge and skill in the areas of outdoor and/or environmental education.


Duration
The course may be taken over one semester full-time or part-time over one or two years.


Admission requirements

  • A Bachelor degree or equivalent.
  • Three semesters of study for current undergraduate students enrolled in one of the courses offered by the Centre for Excellence in Outdoor and Environmental Education.

Special requirements
Applicants are required to complete a Supplementary Information Form available from the School website www.latrobe.edu.au/oent/.


Course structure
The course consists of four subjects of study, a total of 60 credit points. Successful applicants negotiate with the course co-ordinator the subjects they will enroll in but students may choose from core and elective subjects within our undergraduate and post-graduate programs, provided they can satisfy any necessary pre-requisites. There are also some new subjects available only to students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Outdoor Environmental Education.


Subjects
Provided that new and current students meet the necessary pre-requisites they can choose from any subjects taught within the Centre for Excellence in Outdoor and Environmental Education. Full description of subjects, including the subject name, subject code, credit points, campus/location, subject coordinator, class requirements, assessment, prerequisites, and readings is available from the subject database at www.latrobe.edu.au/udb_public.

Some subjects that may be of particular interest to applicants include the following new and existing subjects:

OED3OPE: Outdoor Environmental Practical Extensions (15cps)
In this subject students who satisfy the necessary pre-requisites can choose from a range of options on offer each year. Some of the options may include: 10 day trip on the Franklin River in Tasmania, or an 8 day sea-kayaking trip at Wilson’s Promontory. Students may have to meet some of their personal travel costs.

Rafting Kayaking

 

OED2FEC: Field Experience C (30cps)
In this subject students can choose to participate in either an 18 day walk in the Main Range area or an 18 day sea-kayak in the Whitsundays. Students may have to meet some of their personal travel costs.

Hiking

 

Advanced River Guiding (15cps)
In this subject, offered in the September school and university holidays each year, students who satisfy the necessary pre-requisites will be equipped with the skills, knowledge and experience to guide rafts on grade 3 water. Over an eight day period students will be taught how to ‘read’ whitewater, choose lines, maneuver rafts, conduct maintenance and repair, and effect river rescues.

Rockclimbing

Advanced Rockclimbing Guiding (15cps)
In this subject, students who satisfy necessary pre-requisites will be develop aid-climbing skills, rescue skills and be assessed for the Single-Pitch Guide with the Australian Climbing Instructors’ Association.
