Research Interests

My major areas of research are environmental history and management, and the ecological effects of recreation. The effects of recreation upon Australian ecosystems is essentially unstudied apart from a few iconic areas such as alpine regions and coral reefs. My current research project is investigating the ecology of a cliff system in dry woodland, the effects of recreational rockclimbing upon this, and the previous and current management actions undertaken at the site. My teaching, particularly in the subjects I coordinate directly incorporates the results of this research. This research also has direct relevance to the practice of both staff and students in the department, and broader relevance to the professions of outdoor leadership and ecotourism.
