Tracy Fortune

BAppSc (OccTher) LaTrobe, MSc (Paediatric OT) E Lond, PhD USyd

Tracy is currently senior lecturer in occupational therapy at La Trobe University, where she works across both years of the graduate entry Masters program (predominantly coordinating the 2 nd year). She is also Senior Project Officer, North Western Aged Mental Health Program, where she manages a range of capacity building and workforce development projects for the organization.

Tracy 's research expertise is in the area of qualitative methodology. She is a member of the Mental Health Research Stream within the School of Occupational Therapy . Her Master's degree focused on her interest in the area of occupational theory and clinical reasoning, and her dissertation looked at the role of British occupational therapists working in the field of child and adolescent mental health. While in London , Tracy worked in an NHS Trust with children and families, and in local government (social services).

On her return to Australia in 1996, Tracy developed, taught and managed the undergraduate occupational therapy program at Charles Sturt University , and in 1998 began doctoral level studies. Her PhD was an ethnographic exploration of acute inpatient mental health environments for older people.

While completing her PhD in Sydney , Tracy began working for NSW Health's Drug Programs Bureau, where she developed a keen interest in population based approaches to health.   Tracy managed a number of capacity building projects associated with enabling frontline workers (GPs, Youth Workers, and Ethnic Services) to identify and respond to the drug and alcohol problems among their clients.

Tracy is committed to exploring innovative approaches to teaching and learning, the development of health promotion and project management skills among occupational therapists, and in enabling occupational therapists within inpatient mental health facilities to work at the level of the occupational environment (milieu).
