Postgraduate Coursework in Occupational Therapy


Two Postgraduate Certificate courses in Occupational Therapy are offered by the School of Occupational Therapy:

These Postgraduate Certificate courses enable graduates with occupational therapy qualifications to pursue further studies specifically tailored to supporting occupational therapists' professional development. They allow you to:

  • study a single unit in an area of particular interest;
  • undertake coursework studies in occupational therapy, or in paediatric occupational therapy as part of your Postgraduate Certificate course ;
  • develop advanced knowledge and skills in paediatric occupational therapy practice to effectively respond to the needs of children in our communities;
  • extend your knowledge of evidence based occupational therapy practice;
  • learn skills for critically appraising and undertaking research;
  • deepen your understanding of occupation, and theoretical frameworks used in occupational therapy;
  • combine campus-based, distance education and online modes of learning in your studies.

These Postgraduate Certificate courses also provide a pathway into continuing postgraduate study within the Master of Occupational Therapy course, with the option of transfer into the Master of Occupational Therapy program for students who demonstrate a high level of achievement (B grade average: 70+).

Course Structure

The Postgraduate Certificate courses are only offered on a part-time basis. A minimum of one year part-time equivalent study is required to complete the course.

All students must undertake 60 credit points of study in the Masters program to meet eligibility criteria for a Postgraduate Certificate in Occupational Therapy or a Postgraduate Certificate in Paediatric Occupational Therapy. Credit is not normally granted for previously completed courses of study.

Postgraduate Certificate in Occupational Therapy

Students undertake 60 credit points of coursework, equivalent to four 15 credit point units of study, on a part-time basis as described below.

Two core coursework units (30 credit points) to develop knowledge and skills for critical appraisal of research evidence and to examine occupation-related theoretical and research knowledge that support occupational therapy practice.

Postgraduate Certificate in Paediatric Occupational Therapy

Students undertake 60 credit points of coursework, equivalent to four 15 credit point units of study, on a part-time basis as described below.

Three core coursework units (45 credit points) to develop knowledge and skills for critical appraisal of research evidence and to examine theoretical knowledge, skills and evidence that support paediatric occupational therapy practice.

Electives within the above courses

Electives are approved on an individual basis, depending on the program of study being undertaken - contact the Postgraduate Courses Co-ordinator for further details.

Some units in other postgraduate programs offered by Schools/Centres within the Faculty of Health Sciences may be taken as electives to a maximum of 15 credit points of study in the Postgraduate Certificate courses, subject to approval by the course co-ordinator. For example, this may include units offered in the following:

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Gerontology
  • Master of Public Health
  • Master of Professional Practice Development

Fees

In 2009 the Postgraduate Certificates in Occupational Therapy will attract tuition fees of $6490 per annum ($1622.50 per 15 credit point unit).

Admission


Postgraduate Certificates in Occupational Therapy: Applicants should hold at least a WFOT recognised Bachelor of Occupational Therapy degree (or equivalent). Evidence of some professional practice experience is preferred.

 

Prospective applicants who do not meet the standard entry requirements should contact the course coordinator for information about non-standard (conditional) admission. Non-standard entry may involve satisfactory completion of a negotiated program of postgraduate study, prior to enrolment.
