Doctor of Philosophy

The degree of Doctor of Philosophy is the principal research training degree in the University. The Doctor of Philosophy program in the School of Occupational Therapy provides students with an opportunity to investigate an area of research related to occupational therapy, under the supervision of qualified researchers.

The School of Occupational Therapy employs staff with expertise in both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies in a wide range of specific content areas. During candidature students will have regular contact with nominated supervisors and will have the opportunity to develop a research network through research seminar series and involvement in associated research groups. Additional input by co-supervisors is encouraged and will be arranged on a needs basis.

Quality research is currently being conducted in areas such as:

  • decision making in rehabilitation and occupational therapy services
  • neurological rehabilitation, including: assessment and treatment of motor, somatosensory and cognitive dysfunction; stroke recovery and cerebral reorganisation
  • assessment of function, including use of the AMPS (Assessment of Motor and Process Skills) and activities of daily living
  • occupational health
  • psychiatric rehabilitation and schizophrenia

  • youth unemployment, time use, female delinquency
  • intervention in paediatrics

  • professional issues and human services marketing

The normal requirement for admission as a candidate is at least an upper second class honours degree or a Masters degree. Either degree course must have included a substantial research dissertation as part of the requirements of the course. It requires not less than two and a half years and not more than five years of full-time research within the University under the guidance of a supervisor. It is also possible to be admitted as a part-time candidate. A PhD thesis shall not exceed 100,000 words. The candidate should demonstrate a capacity for independent research and an ability to make a substantial and original contribution to learning.
