Occupational Therapy
Master of Applied Science

The Master of Applied Science program in the School of Occupational Therapy provides students with an opportunity to investigate an area of research related to occupational therapy, under the supervision of qualified researchers.

The School of Occupational Therapy employs staff with expertise in both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies in a wide range of specific content areas. During candidature students will have regular contact with nominated supervisors and will have the opportunity to develop a research network through research seminar series and involvement in associated research groups. Additional input by co-supervisors is encouraged and will be arranged on a needs basis.

Quality research is currently being conducted in areas such as:

  • decision making in rehabilitation and occupational therapy services
  • neurological rehabilitation, including: assessment and treatment of motor, somatosensory and cognitive dysfunction; stroke recovery and cerebral reorganisation
  • assessment of function, including use of the AMPS (Assessment of Motor and Process Skills) and activities of daily living
  • occupational health
  • psychiatric rehabilitation and schizophrenia
  • women's health
  • aged care
  • youth unemployment, time use, female delinquency
  • intervention in paediatrics
  • experiential learning
  • professional issues and human services marketing

The normal requirements for admission to the Master of Applied Science program are a Bachelor degree with Honours or Bachelor degree and a postgraduate diploma (completed with at least a B average), pass in Masters preliminary, or at least two years of relevant professional or research experience. Demonstration of additional skills or publication of a meritorious nature other than the above may also provide an acceptable basis for admission.

The Master of Applied Science is a research degree which may be completed by thesis only. The period for completion is a minimum of one year full-time or the equivalent part-time and a maximum of three years full-time or four years part-time. A thesis should not normally exceed 50,000 words in length. The thesis submitted for a Masters degree by research should show that the candidate has mastered the skills of research appropriate to the field of study. The collection and critical evaluation of existing knowledge and techniques, their application (under supervision) to a specific program of research, and ultimately their inclusion in a well-written and presented thesis are important features of a Masters degree. Reviewing the literature, solving problems, applying techniques, designing experiments and statistical evaluation are skills relevant to a Masters degree.
