Current Responsibilities:
My appointment to the joint position of Professor of Midwifery at La Trobe University and the Mercy Hospital for Women is to provide professional leadership and head the Mercy/La Trobe Midwifery Professorial Unit.
I am a principal/co supervisor for Masters PhD and Professional Doctorate students. In addition I co-ordinate subjects within the undergraduate and postgraduate programs
As the University supports the concept of Clinical Schools, we are based at the Mercy Hospital for Women, Heidelberg, to lead innovation in education, training, research and development. I also maintain strong links with other teaching hospitals and maternity services locally, nationally and internationally.
My activities apart from University Division of Nursing and Midwifery/Mercy Hospital for Women committee responsibilities include:
- Midwifery Courses Accreditation Advisor to the Nurses Board of Victoria for Curriculum and Course Accreditation
- Scientific Reviewer for NHMRC project grant applications
- Scientific reviewer for numerous National and International Midwifery, Examiner for PhD and Master Degree theses
- Member of the Board, Tweddle and Family Health Service, Victoria
Major Research Interests:
- Evaluation of current practice policies and models of care in the clinical setting for the improvement of maternal and infant outcomes
- Systematic reviews of perinatal care
- Promotion of the use of evidence based models of health care
Professor McDonald’s research background and major research interests lie in the area of evaluation of clinical practice interventions in maternal and neonatal care and in the broader context of women’s reproductive health.
