What our students say about us
Lucie Anne Coade - 2nd Year Bachelor Nursing
I love studying nursing at La Trobe University because they have just updated the clinical labs upstairs and the facilities are amazing to learn in. And then the lectures incorporate such a wide variety of aspects that are covered in the nursing field that really get you prepared for when you go out into hospital placements and discover what it is like first hand.

I've learned a huge amount of new information all of which has been really fascinating. Most of it really useful even in your personal life. It's been very challenging. They teach you to be independent in the way you think and approach everything you do to do with nursing. So yes, it's been the best thing I've ever done.

The best thing about studying nursing at La Trobe would have to be the support that you get from your uni-coordinators, your lecturers and your tutors. And I think that the commitment that they have to us as students really ensures that the university turns out individuals that are professional, confident and more than capable to work in the nursing profession.

Fiona Copland - 1st Year Bachelor Midwifery
The thing I liked best that I like about studying at the Bundoora Campus at La Trobe is the sort of country feeling friendly relaxed environment that it offers. And because I grew up in the country myself it sort of really just helped me transition in to University life. And with studying midwifery at La Trobe I just found that the lecturers have been so friendly and supportive and if I ever had a trouble with learning something in class or have I forgotten something to do with the course they are so willing to make an appointment with you and help you through any of the troubles you might be having regardless really of the sort of the time constraints that they may have.
Caieta Smith - 1st Year Bachelor Midwifery/Nursing
Coming to La Trobe has made me realise the sky is the limit and with this in mind my dreams have been so much more achieveable than I ever would have imagined. La Trobe is focused on people forming friendships and relationships within their course and with this in mind there is a various array of events and functions to cater for everyone's personalities. In terms of academics the lectureres are very approachable and it's important for everyone to utilise this whenever they may be struggeling in class.

Director of Nursing Austin Hospital - Anne Marie Keenan
What does La Trobe/Austin Health Clinical School of Nursing mean for Austin Health?
It's been a really important future step in terms of nursing education and creating that academic environment for The Austin nursing division. The establishment of the clinical school has provided us further opportunity to increase the profile of nursing education and nursing academia here at Austin Health. The fact that the students come here for a significant component of their clinical time in 3rd year has been really important in terms of their integration into the health service and creating that strong academic link and collegial link through to the university sector. We are where the nurses end up working particularly in their first couple of years post graduation, so it is important that they have an understanding what nursing is about and being part of a tertiary teaching centre.
How do you find the preparation of La Trobe nursing graduates for their role at Austin Health?
I think that the fact that we have worked close with La Trobe University and have input into their undergraduate program has been a really important step in creating nurses that are more ready for practice when they commence as graduate nurses. We have just recently done some further work on that in increasing their capacity to start their 3rd year rotation in their clinical areas and that has also proved a benefit in terms of their ability of what they are getting out of that 3rd year of practice and their readiness of their next phase when they become graduates. I think having placements here and having that strong link they get to know the basics like how to get from the car park, basic things like where the toilets are and how the wards are set up which I think is a big step in terms of when you first start as a new graduate.
