Nurse Immuniser Program

For division 1 registered Nurses who wish to become endorsed Nurse Immunisers

The Nurse Immuniser Program and the Return to Practice – Immuniser Program are offered by the Division of Nursing and Midwifery, La Trobe University and PREMIUMHEALTH under contract from the Department of Health, Victoria. The purpose of the contract is to conduct a program for division 1 registered nurses who wish to become endorsed Nurse Immunisers in Victoria. This program will prepare division 1 registered nurses in order to apply for endorsement by the Nurses Board of Victoria (NBV). The program is offered three times a year.

The Program

The Program covers immunisation throughout the lifespan, but excludes travel immunisation. Thus a division 1 registered nurse who has undertaken this program will be eligible to apply for endorsement as a Nurse Immuniser in order to immunise all age groups, including infants and children. The Nurse Immuniser Program and the Return to Practice – Immuniser Program is available on a fee-paying basis as a continuing education unit and is offered by distance education. Nurses wishing to become endorsed Nurse Immunisers must successfully complete all the components of the program.

The program includes three components:

  • Theory: Comprising a distance education Study Guide covering eight weeks study supported by an on-campus tutorial (the latter is optional but students are advised to attend), with compulsory written activities and an open-book examination.
  • Workshop: A mandatory Immunisation Emergencies: Management and Resuscitation (IEMR) workshop during which students have to reach a satisfactory skill level. There is a separate and additional fee which students pay directly to PREMIUMHEALTH for this workshop.
  • Clinical: Involves giving a minimum of 10 immunisations under the supervision of an accredited nurse immuniser (which each nurse must arrange for themselves). At least 4 different doses must be administered to children less than two (2) years of age.

The program takes 12 weeks to complete the theory, and allows up to 2 months after the exam for the clinical component to be completed.

Please note: Students will need a computer with internet access and a current email address.

Credit Points

The program has been developed as equivalent to the course work of a La Trobe University Division of Nursing and Midwifery unit at the postgraduate diploma level and attracts 20 credit points.
