Professional Recognition
The IRON course will allow suitably qualified internationally registered nurses to undertake a short, non-award course, necessary to register and work as a Division I Nurse in Victoria, Australia.
Benefits of the IRON Course at La Trobe University
Participants who successfully complete the IRON course will attain the necessary competencies defined by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) National Competency Standards for registration as Division 1 Registered Nurses by the Nurses Board of Victoria, Australia. The course addresses:
- Contemporary thinking and research about current best practice and evidence based health care and nursing practice;
- Health care in the Australian context;
- Interpersonal communication and teamwork with patients, other nurses and interdisciplinary health care staff;
- Nursing knowledge and skills required for the provision of person-centred care and health outcomes; and
- Roles and responsibilities expected of a Division 1 Registered Nurse in Victoria inclusive of areas around patient care, interdisciplinary practice and risk management.
Entry Requirements
Candidates must:
- Be qualified and currently registered as a nurse in a country other than Australia,
- Apply to the Nurses Board of Victoria (NBV) for approval to undertake the course (website: http://www.nbv.org.au/web/guest/home),
- Provide a letter from the NBV stating that they will be eligible for registration upon satisfactory completion of the course, and
- Provide evidence of English Language Competency which meets NBV requirements as of 1st July 2009 (www.nbv.org.au). Candidates must achieve a score of at least 7.0 in all four components of the IELTS which includes reading, listening, writing and speaking; with an overall band of at least 7.0.

Course Structure
The IRON course consists of a minimum 80 hours of directed learning and up to 400* hours of supervised clinical placement. The course will be undertaken in a predominantly full-time mode over 13 weeks. The clinical component of the course will be undertaken with five, eight-hour shifts per week for the duration of clinical placements to a maximum of 400 hours.

Clinical Placement:
La Trobe University Bendigo Campus has agreement from a number of regional clinical venues to facilitate IRON students in supernumerary clinical placement. The primary venues for clinical placement will be Bendigo Health and St John of God Hospital, both of which are located in Bendigo. However, prospective students should note some clinical placements may be in other agencies outside Bendigo.
