What is the STAT?
The Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) is an aptitude test designed to assess a range of competencies commonly considered important for success in tertiary study.
Applicants applying for Nursing at La Trobe University, who are recommended to sit the STAT are required to sit the STAT Multiple Choice (STAT M) Test only. This test requires the applicant to read and interpret graphical displays of information and passages of writing, to use mathematical relationships and to apply reasoning to tables of data. The test is made up of the following:
- 70 multiple choice questions
- Two hours long with 10 minutes reading time.
It should be noted that as of August 2009, applicants wishing to apply for entry into the Bachelor of Nursing (Division 2 Conversion) course are no longer required to sit the STAT Multiple Choice Test.
Do you need to sit the STAT M?
Not all applicants are required to sit the STAT M as it depends on the course you apply for and your academic background. Following is a list that should be used as a guide when determining if you should sit the STAT M:
Applicants who are not required to undertake the STAT M:
- All applicants applying for the Bachelor of Nursing (Division 2 Conversion) course;
- Current VCE or HSC (or equivalent in other states) applicants;
- Applicants with an ENTER or UAI higher than the 2009 published ENTER for the course in which they wish to apply;
- Applicants with previous University study who have a high Grade Point Average;
- Applicants who have completed the STAT M since May 2005 and have a high overall percentile.
Applicants who must sit the STAT M in order to be considered for an offer of enrolment:
- Mature Age applicants who have not previously completed VCE, HSC (or equivalent in other states) or University Study and who are applying for a Nursing course (with exception of Division 2 Conversion) at La Trobe University;
- Mature Age applicants who have completed TAFE studies only (with exception of Division 2 Conversion);
- Applicants who previously sat the STAT M prior to May 2005 (STAT M results are only valid in Victoria from May 2005) and wish to be considered by means of the STAT M result.
Applicants who should consider sitting the STAT M in order to increase the chance of being considered for an offer of enrolment:
- Mature Age applicants who have completed VCE or HSC (or equivalent in other states) with an ENTER or UAI Score slightly above, at or below the 2009 published cut off for the course they wish to apply;
- Applicants applying for the Bachelor of Nursing (Graduate Entry) course with an overall average between 50% - 60%;
- Applicants who have previously applied for Nursing at La Trobe University based on their ENTER, UAI or Grade Point Average without success;
- Applicants who have previously completed a total of one semester worth of University study;
- Applicants applying for any Nursing course (other than Graduate Entry) who have completed a minimum of one year’s worth of University Study with an overall average between 50% - 60%.
How is the STAT M result considered for selection?
Upon completion of the STAT M, your final grades are forwarded not only to you but also to VTAC or UAC for consideration during the selection process.
The Selection Committee will be provided access to both a Score and Percentile Ranking relevant to your achievements within the STAT M within the following categories:
- Verbal;
- Quantitative;
- Overall.
Applicants are ranked based on their Overall Percentile Ranking and considered for an offer accordingly.
The Percentile Ranking indicates the percentage of candidates who had a score less than your score. For example, if you achieve a percentile rank of 80.4, you have achieved a score higher than 80.3% of the remainder of applicants who sat the STAT M.
How do you apply to sit the STAT M?
If you have decided to sit the STAT M, you must complete the STAT question on the VTAC Online Application when applying for entry in 2010. Further information regarding registering for the STAT M can be found at the following link:
