  • La Trobe creates new Research Centre for Contemporary Greek Studies

At a meeting of the La Trobe University Council on Monday 20 October it was resolved to establish a new Research Centre for Contemporary Greek Studies located in the University's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and to close the National Centre for Hellenic Studies and Research (NCHSR).
"The Vice-Chancellor and I have consulted closely with our generous supporter, the Society for Hellenic Studies and Research Incorporated, about the future of the NCHSR and its successor. The University is keen to work together with the community to ensure the new research centre is a success," said Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research), Professor Tim Brown.
"Council took this decision following a rigorous academic review of the existing Centre, conducted by a team of international experts in Hellenic Studies, who closely examined the NCHSR and the range of its activities over the last five years.
"The University accepts the findings and recommendations of their compelling report, chiefly that the NCHSR be closed and a new faculty-based centre for Greek studies be established," said Professor Brown.
La Trobe University has been working closely with the Society for Hellenic Studies to identify how the new arrangements can best serve community needs while not compromising the University's commitment to high-quality international research and teaching.
A pressing issue for the University has been how to resolve the important question of preserving the Jack Dardalis Archives presently stored at the NCHSR.
"It's a question we hope to resolve rapidly with the Society for Hellenic Studies and Research and other members of the community who are vitally interested in the archives" said Professor Brown.
La Trobe University will hold a public meeting to discuss with the community important issues such as the archives and community involvement in teaching and research at 6 pm on Thursday October 30 at the National Centre For Hellenic Studies and Research, Ernest Jones Drive, Macleod.
