Narrator:
The new $9 million Shepparton campus of La Trobe University is under construction. The project was jointly funded by the State and Federal Governments and La Trobe University, and the official opening for October 2010. The building will bring together all of La Trobe’s activities on campus, and will be located on the corner of Fryers St and North St on the Panomarket site in Shepparton.

Elizabeth Lavender:
For the last at least 15 years we’ve been sharing facilities with the Goulbourn Ovens Tafe, which has been very generous of them. Our students have their classes at Tafe and the administration building is a further 10 minutes away, so the students and the staff have been separate and it’s difficult, so we're looking forward to being all in one place.

Narrator:
La Trobe University is contributing $2 million to the project, which will be the University's most innovative learning space and reflect international best practice such as a 5 Star Green Star energy rating.

Elizabeth Lavender:
There are built in underground water tanks, there is solar hot water, under concrete cooling which is on the ground floor, there is energy efficient air conditioning upstairs, there is facilities for bicycles, lots of showering facilities, there is lots of shading outside both natural and by means of window coverings and the whole building has been designed so the natural light can be used rather than artificial light.

Narrator:
The stunning external appearance of the 2000 square metre, 2 story building will become one of Shepparton's iconic structures and will facilitate and enable the introduction of new and innovative courses.

Elizabeth Lavender:
This year we are actually offering 3 more health science courses where students can come here and do their first year of their program and in years to come we will introduce more programs and of course we will have the facilities to do that here and we will be working with the City of Shepparton to find what programs we really need in the Shepparton area.

Narrator:
The unique modern design will incorporate the latest in multi-functional open teaching and learning spaces to allow students space to get the most from their University education.

Elizabeth Lavender:
Another very important fact is that it will give us our own identity and we know that Shepparton is very keen to have it’s university in Shepparton that it can identify with.
