Led by La Trobe Asia's Professor Nick Bisley, the panel will include the Honourable Bob Carr, Linda Jakobson from China Matters, Dr Geoff Raby and Dr John Lee from the Strategic Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University.

The panel will discuss Australia's relationship with China, including Australia's deep concerns about the broader consequences of China's return as a great power. The panel will also discuss the recent fall of the Chinese economy and its repercussions for Australia, and the implications of the highly controversial Free Trade Agreement.

The speakers:

Bob Carr: Director of the Australia-China Relations Institute at the University of Technology, Sydney, a think tank focused on Australia-China relations.

Linda Jakobson: Founding director of not-for-profit, 'China Matters', which aims to stimulate a nuanced and informed public discourse about china's rise and its implications for Australia.

John Lee: Adjunct Associate Professor at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University, and a Senior Fellow (non-resident) at the Hudson Institute in Washington DC.

Geoff Raby: A graduate of La Trobe University, also Australia's Ambassador to China from 2007-2011. He is now director of his Beijing-based business advisory company – Geoff Raby and Associates Ltd.

Nick Bisley: Executive Director of La Trobe Asia and Professor of International Relations at La Trobe. His research and teaching expertise is in the international relations of the Asia-Pacific, globalisation and the diplomacy of great powers. Nick is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Australian Journal of International Affairs, the country's oldest scholarly journal in the field of International Relations.
