The Collection has been developed by IRU Vice Chancellors’ Fellow, Professor Jessica Vanderlelie to showcase innovative practices that support student and graduate success. The aim of the collection is to disseminate good practice, and provide a mechanism through which to encourage cross-sector collaboration in the area of student and graduate success with emphasis on employability.
Professor of Practice at La Trobe’s Business School, Professor Jacobson has been heavily involved in the curriculum for the subject ‘Social Entrepreneurship’ with a strong emphasis on student employability and has numerous practical learning opportunities. The subject incorporates the United Nations Principles for Responsible Management in Education (UN PRME) of which La Trobe University was a founding signatory.
One of the main roles of a Professor of Practice is to guide students in learning, through example and instruction. Being taught by someone who is highly involved in a specific business field provides an extremely rare opportunity for students to get a better understanding of how the theory can actually be applied into practice. La Trobe University Business School was the first business school in Australia utilising the valuable Professor of Practice model.
A key focus of the curriculum is the value of “human care and profit flair”. This position encompasses teaching principles, which highlight the need and merit in being a multifaceted entrepreneur valuing human care in addition to solely profit driven commercial motivators.
Participation in The Big Idea competition is a major component of the ‘Social Entrepreneurship’ curriculum, supported by Professor of Practice Jacobson. The Big Idea is an initiative of The Big Issue designed to find and deliver solutions to homelessness and disadvantage. In 2016, La Trobe University had not only one but two teams go through to The Big Idea award final.
