La Trobe University will host Bendigo's newest and most innovative educational facility, as part of a multi-million dollar State Government funded program announced today.A new Tech School will provide state-of-the-art equipment and resources for secondary-level students from across Bendigo. It will promote and encourage study in 'STEM' disciplines – science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
La Trobe University Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar said programs would be designed to ensure that students are well prepared to take advantage of future opportunities in employment, vocational training and higher education.
"We welcome this significant investment in education by the State Government. It will not only benefit local students and their families, but also Bendigo's business and manufacturing sector," Professor Dewar said.
"This is another way we are helping make Bendigo an education city. We know that a strong focus on STEM education is vital for innovative business and workforce development, and ensuring we meet future employment demand here in Bendigo and the wider region," he said.
Head of the Bendigo campus, Rob Stephenson, said the new school would complement the campus' strong commitment to ensuring that graduates develop the skills and knowledge they need for a successful career.
"Our master plan includes a new engineering building, which signals the University's strong commitment to STEM education, and its importance to the local and regional community. The Tech School promises to further enhance that aim by equipping secondary students with the skills they need to be innovative and technology-savvy. It will create new opportunities for Bendigo and the students themselves," Mr Stephenson said.
La Trobe University's Bendigo campus has approximately 5000 students enrolled in a variety of courses including health sciences, science, technology and engineering; education, business, law, the humanities and social sciences.
The campus is currently undertaking the first prioritised stages of a comprehensive 15-year Master Plan that will transform the Flora Hill Campus and increase its engagement with the Bendigo community.
The Tech School is expected to be ready for students by the start of 2018.
