Innovative toothbrush program for school

Swan Hill Primary students are getting lessons in good oral health - the first school to be involved as part of  La Trobe University's Engaging Rural Communities in Oral Health program.

The Swan Hill ECOH team have been working together over the past 12 months.

Pupils will be given free toothpaste and toothbrushes donated by Colgate as part of the Pacific Smiles Taskforce, as well as information and support about the importance of maintaining good oral health.

The University's Rural Health School has joined forces with Swan Hill council, the city's District Health service, the Swan Hill clinic and now Swan Hill Primary School to conduct the sessions.

La Trobe's Dr Virginia Dickson-Swift says the initiative is a great example of the community taking charge of local health issues.

'We are working with health staff, council members and educators to get the message out about the importance of brushing and good oral health. We have already been doing this at the local clinic with families attending immunisation sessions and it's proving a very successful collaboration.

'Now we are extending this to Swan Hill Primary. Its involvement is exactly what this project is all about – listening to what the community needs around better health care provision and information and acting on that,' Dr Dickson-Swift said.

The La Trobe team approached Colgate for support and the company provided 500 child friendly toothbrushes and toothpaste.
