‘Advanced Standing subjects allow students to experience the demands of university study whilst still completing their VCE,’ said Dale Pearce, Principal of Bendigo Senior Secondary College. ‘The college is delighted to be working closely with La Trobe University to make this opportunity available to our students.’

Advanced Standing: Urban, Rural and Environmental Planning

La Trobe has one of Australia’s leading degrees in Urban, Rural and Environmental Planning, regularly winning awards and seeing a high percentage of graduating students quickly being employed in the sector, many securing part time work before completing their course.

‘Students who undertake the Advanced Standing subjects are best positioning themselves for a place in this highly competitive degree and employment area,’ said Trevor Budge, Associate Professor in Community Planning and Development and Head of the Humanities and Social Sciences Faculty in Bendigo.

‘The program also offers the most extensive planning fieldwork and international study tour program of any Australian university offering urban planning course,’ said Mr Budge.

Advanced Standing: Civil Engineering

Head of Civil Engineering and Physical Sciences, Professor Joe Petrolito said Advanced Standing subjects for La Trobe’s Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree at the Bendigo campus opens up career opportunities ranging from general engineering practise right through to CEO level in the private, government and research sectors.

The current demand for qualified engineers is high and job prospects for La Trobe engineering students look bright,’ said Professor Petrolito.

‘The new Advanced Standing program complements our award-winning scholarship program and industry mentoring program, and it will enable students to get a taste of a civil engineering career,’ said Professor Petrolito.

A step ahead: gaining credit towards further study

Students who successfully complete the subjects and meet course related pre-requisites will gain credit towards their Bachelor of Urban, Rural and Environmental Planning, Bachelor of Civil Engineering, or Bachelor of Arts degrees putting them a step ahead of other applicants.

Students who participate in the Advanced Standing program have the opportunity to be awarded a $500 bursary by La Trobe University. To qualify for the bursary, they must achieve over 70% in the subject in both first and second semester of the program. They must also enrol for the degree course at La Trobe. If they meet both requirements, they will be eligible for the bursary in the second semester of the first year of their degree.

La Trobe has waived HECS fees for these subjects, potentially saving the students thousands of dollars.

‘Making a choice on what and where to study is one of the biggest decisions a student will ever make. This program is an opportunity for students to experience university study and get a head start in life,’ said Mr Budge.
