Cheaper transport for overseas students

A public transport concession trial for international students in Victoria announced by Premier Denis Napthine is welcome news for the state’s higher education sector.

Myki public transportLa Trobe University Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar said the decision had the potential to make the state a more attractive study destination for international students.

‘International education is an extremely important and highly-valued industry in Victoria,’ Professor Dewar said.

'International students bring a vibrancy and diversity to our state and education providers that complement the existing multicultural layers of Victoria.

‘In a softening international education market, this public transport concession trial is a welcome initiative from the state government.

‘Public transport support in Victoria is important for international students and something which has been the subject of university lobbying for some time.

‘This initiative will help open up Melbourne and La Trobe University to a wider market of students around the world.

‘La Trobe University looks forward to receiving further detail of the announced trial and assessing the implications for La Trobe’s international students.

‘We hope that this initiative will assist international education in Victoria which is the state’s largest single export industry and is valued at $4.365 billion,’ Professor Dewar said.
