Looking to our future

Peter-Grattan-standardOn Tuesday, 23 October Peter Mares, Cities Fellow at the Grattan Institute, will speak on the future of Australian cities.

Andrew Butt, Lecturer in Planning at La Trobe University Bendigo, says that the lecture will provide timely advice on how to deal with rapid population growth in the city’s suburbs from a highly respected organisation.

‘The Grattan institute’s Cities Program seeks to examine and develop policy on a wide range of topics, including how to design cities for people, decision making in cities and housing and city structure.

‘Bendigo is going through a growth phase, particularly in suburbs to the city’s north but also in new areas outside of the urban boundary,’ he says.

‘The majority of research on how to deal with urban growth has been done in metropolitan areas. This is because that is where most of the nation’s population is located.

‘But three million Australians live in small and medium sized rural towns and cities and some population issues are just as acute, if not more acute, in regional areas as they are in the capital cities. So it is an appropriate time to examine what lessons can be learnt from metropolitan growth suburbs.’

The free public event is part of the Arts and Planning Forum Series and is hosted by the La Trobe University Planning Department and Plan B La Trobe Student Planners’ Association. It commences at 6 pm, Tuesday, October 23 at the La Trobe Visual Arts Centre, 121 View Street, Bendigo, 3550.
