Finance students attend UniSuper workshop
On 4 September 2012, a group of students from La Trobe University attended a full-day investment workshop conducted by UniSuper at their Melbourne offices.
The workshop was a unique opportunity, providing students with a practical insight into the investment and portfolio practices of one of Australia’s largest superannuation funds and giving students an increased awareness of the investment and funds management industry.
Attended by a mix of undergraduate and postgraduate students primarily studying a finance degree and seeking to enter the financial services and investment industry, the workshop was led by Mr John Pearce, Chief Investment Officer at UniSuper who was supported throughout the day by senior members of his investment team.
As well as learning about the investment of funds and the management of the various asset classes, students also participated in an asset allocation trading game with the aim of determining an appropriate mix of assets for an investment portfolio based on various economic and financial data.
The workshop provided students with an invaluable opportunity to learn from and network with key investment professionals and to be able to apply their technical knowledge in a work-based learning environment.
The Department of Finance is hoping to make the UniSuper workshop an annual event for its students and is seeking to extend the work-based learning experiences to other financial service organisations.
Mr Marc Olynyk, a senior lecturer in Financial Planning at La Trobe University praised the workshop for offering students real-world learning opportunities.
‘As one of the market leaders in finance and financial services education in Australia, La Trobe’s programs are designed to assist students to succeed in this rapidly expanding sector of the economy’ said Mr Olynyk.
‘We can achieve this by integrating student learning experiences within a work-based learning environment at every opportunity.’
