Former Director of Bendigo Art Gallery and recently appointed Director of the National Gallery of Victoria, Tony Ellwood will be returning to Bendigo to take part in this year’s La Trobe University Sir John Quick Lecture.
Mr Ellwood will join current Bendigo Art Gallery Director, Karen Quinlan for a lounge style discussion about art and the gallery practice with former Bendigo Art Gallery Board President, John Higgs.
La Trobe University’s Bendigo Campus Director, Andrew Skewes says this is a not-to-be-missed session for art lovers.
‘John will chat with Tony and Karen about the role of a regional gallery and will quiz them about the key influencers and drivers that have guided their careers. They will also be invited to share some of their past highlights and opportunities on the horizon,’ said Mr Skewes.
Mr Skewes said that all three presenters have a close association with Bendigo. ‘John has devoted 21 years of service to the Bendigo Art Gallery Board so he got to know Tony and Karen quite well between 1996 and 1999, when Tony was the gallery’s director and Karen its curator.
‘With so much knowledge of the art world in one room, this promises to be an intriguing evening,’ said Mr Skewes.
Mr Skewes said that there is also a special connection between La Trobe University and the three presenters.
‘Tony has been acknowledged as a Distinguished Alumnus of La Trobe University and John is a former Head of Education Studies at the Bendigo Campus,’ said Mr Skewes.
‘Under Karen’s leadership, La Trobe University and the Bendigo Art Gallery have built a strong relationship, in particular with the University’s View Street Gallery.’
The Sir John Quick Lecture will be held at the Bendigo Art Gallery commencing at 6.00 pm on Friday 16 November (drinks and nibbles on arrival). Bookings are essential – phone 03 5444 7374 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
