A lesson in Islamic Finance on iTunes U

Riding on the heels of the 2012 Islamic Finance News (IFN) Roadshow, a leader in the field of Islamic Finance and Banking recently visited La Trobe to talk to students about Australia’s possible role in this emerging field.

The IFN Roadshow in Australia was held in Melbourne on May 8 with close support from Victoria Government and drawing over 120 delegates.

La Trobe Business School lecturer Dr. Ishaq Bhatti, Director of the Islamic Banking and Finance program sat on a panel discussing Islamic capital markets and cross-border transactions. Almir Colan, lecturer in Islamic Finance and Islamic capital markets chaired his own session on challenges and opportunities for Islamic finance in Australia.

One major coup for the IFN roadshow was speaker Madzlan Hussain, Partner and Head of Islamic Financial Services at Malaysia’s Zaid Ibrahim & Co (Zicolaw) who spoke about what Southeast Asia and Australia can we learn from the Islamic Banking System. 
 
Mr Hussain advises on matters relating to Islamic financial services, as well as prudential and regulatory frameworks. He also advises clients on corporate exercises and compliance with securities regulation.

During a visit to La Trobe University Mr Hussain spoke to students of Dr Bhatti’s Islamic Banking and Finance program, fielding questions on the importance of Islamic Finance in Australia. He also generously extended an invitation to La Trobe Finance student Ramnik Kaur for an internship at Zicolaw in Malaysia next semester.

‘This is such an exciting opportunity for our Ramnik to gain experience at a major practice in one of the world’s great hubs for Islamic Finance will open up a world of possibilities,’ said Dr Bhatti.
