La Trobe campus wins architecture prize

27 Jun 2011

La Trobe University’s new campus at Shepparton has won the regional prize in the Victorian Architecture Awards, announced late last week.

shep-standardJudges from the Australian Institute of Architects described the $10 million building as a ‘powerful contribution to the town's civic realm’.

La Trobe University shared the award with the Rebuilding Advisory Centre in bush-fire torn Marysville and a community aged citizens’ centre in Traralgon.

Shepparton Campus Director, Dr Elizabeth Lavender, said the award to architects Gray Puksand was ‘exciting confirmation of the design excellence of the new campus’.

‘We are thrilled to be working and studying in this truly magnificent learning space that is fast becoming known as an iconic feature of the Shepparton landscape.

‘Since moving in last December, staff and students have been able to work more collaboratively. It is amazing what a positive change having this new space has made.’ she said.

About 400 students (420) study on the campus, with three more health science courses offered this year and expansion plans for 500 students by the year 2013.

The building, on the Panomarket site at the corner of Fryers and North Streets, was jointly funded by the State and Federal Governments and La Trobe University.

It brings together all La Trobe University activities under one roof after having shared facilities with Goulbourn Ovens Institute of Tafe for 15 years.

With four regional campuses in northern and central Victoria, the Shepparton campus is one of La Trobe University’s most innovative learning spaces. It reflects international best practice such as Five Star Green Star energy rating.

‘The 2,000 square metre two-storey building makes maximum use of natural light while shading for summer heat,’ says Dr Lavender.  ‘It has underground water tanks, solar hot water, as well as facilities for bicycles and showering.’
