Council appoints new Vice-Chancellor
The Council of La Trobe University is pleased to announce that Professor John Dewar has been appointed as Vice-Chancellor of La Trobe University.
Professor Dewar was educated at Oxford University in the UK and has lived in Australia for the last 16 years. During this time he has had extensive experience in the higher education sector and has held senior positions at both Griffith University and The University of Melbourne.
Professor Dewar will take up his position in January 2012.
La Trobe University Chancellor, Adrienne E Clarke AC, said that La Trobe University is very pleased to have been able to attract a person of Professor Dewar’s standing and experience to lead the University into its next phase of development.
‘Professor Dewar joins the University at a time of great change in the Australian higher education system and will help us build on foundations that have been greatly strengthened during the past four years by Professor Paul Johnson who leaves the University at the end of this year,’ Professor Clarke said.
Professor Dewar said ‘I am honoured to accept the position of VC of La Trobe University. La Trobe has a proud tradition of innovation in social inclusion, transformative research, and of leading public debate on matters of pressing national interest. I look forward to building on these strengths, and to taking the University forward into the next phase of its development'.
Professor Dewar, currently the University of Melbourne Provost, is an internationally-known family law specialist. He is a graduate of the University of Oxford, where he was also a Fellow of Hertford College and has worked for a number of British law firms.
