Professor Tim Murray appointed Dean

Professor Tim Murray has been appointed Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at La Trobe University.  

Professor Tim FlanneryProfessor Murray joined the University in 1986 as a Lecturer in Archaeology and was appointed to the Chair of Archaeology in 1995.  He served for many years as head of the then School of Archaeology and has been head of the School of Historical and European Studies since 2001.

Professor Murray has served on the boards of many professional organisations and various State and Federal bodies, and has also provided expert advice to several UK universities through various iterations of the Research Assessment exercise.

In addition to bringing to the role of Dean extensive high-level management experience, Professor Murray has an internationally acclaimed research profile in the areas of theoretical archaeology, history and philosophy of archaeology, heritage archaeology, archaeology of the modern world and indigenous archaeology.  In each of these areas he has produced benchmark publications nationally and internationally, attracted research grants, consultancies and graduate students (domestic and international) and has taught graduate classes at universities in Europe and China.  He receives numerous invitations to speak at national and international conferences and has been awarded numerous visiting professorships.  In 2003 Professor Murray was elected to the Australian Academy of the Humanities and to the Society of Antiquaries of London.

Professor Murray will take up this appointment on 22 June 2009, succeeding Professor David de Vaus.
