‘A taste of chalk’ - What happens when art teachers practise what they teach

What do secondary school art teachers do in their spare time?

In the Bendigo region, they trade in their chalk for pastels, oils, charcoals, clay, film, computer chips and canvases, cameras and turning wheels – anything that writes large and bold that the old axiom “those who can do and those who can’t teach” just won’t hold water.

The proof will be writ large and indelibly for all to see in A Taste of Chalk – an exhibition of the work 20 art educators from the Bendigo region have accomplished in the past 12 months in a variety of media, including painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, digital media, ceramics, mixed media and drawing.

The first exhibition of its kind collectively showcasing the work of such a diverse group of educator-exhibitors - all secondary school teachers as well as practising artists - it will run from Tuesday October 9 to Wednesday October 24 at the Phyllis Palmer Gallery at La Trobe University’s School of Visual Arts and Design, where many of the teachers once studied.

“Art educators do not always have the chance to present their diverse talents; this is an opportunity for the local community to see that they do practise what they teach,” says the Phyllis Palmer Gallery Administrator, Chris Wood.

The exhibition will be officially opened at 5.30 p.m. on Thursday 11 October by Michelle Davies, Curriculum Manager Visual Arts at the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority.
