La Trobe University opens new Children’s Centre

La Trobe University officially opens a new 143-place Children’s Centre on its main Melbourne campus at Bundoora this Thursday, 26 October.

The new facility for children of staff and students brings together all-day and sessional-care services into a single building.

The Centre will be opened at 10.30 am by the Minister for Community Services and Children, the Hon. Sherryl Garbutt.

Centre Director, Jenny Reynolds says the redevelopment comprises two single storey linked buildings of approximately 1,100 square metres, each containing children’s playrooms, service areas and administrative units.

Construction by APM Group (Aust.) began in November 2004 and the children occupied the new facility in November 2005. The architect was Vincent Chrisp and Partners.

A feature of the Centre is a series of gardens for each of the children’s age groups, designed by Simon Corlett from Corvalley Landscape Management.

The La Trobe University Children’s Centre was established in 1971 to provide all day and hourly care for 70 children. It was expanded and relocated in 1984 to its current site near the eastern perimeter of the campus to accommodated 93 children.

In 1991 demand from students and an expanding part-time staff led to the construction of a separate 44 place Sessional Care Centre opposite the existing Centre which has now been rehoused within the new building.
