Nancy Millis Science Lecture: 'Cancer prevention in the 21st Century'
Leading cancer researcher and Australian of the Year, Professor Ian Frazer, will deliver the 2006 La Trobe University Annual Nancy Millis Science Lecture on Tuesday, 10 October at 6pm.
Professor Frazer will speak on ‘Cancer prevention in the 21st Century – where are we heading?’
The lecture is free and open to the public. It will be held in West Lecture Theatre 2 on the La Trobe University main Melbourne campus at Bundoora, see Melway reference C5.
Professor Frazer, founder and head of the University of Queensland Centre for Immunology and Cancer Research, won this year’s Australian of the Year award for developing a vaccine to prevent cervical cancer – the world's first cancer vaccine.
He says more than 500,000 cases of the disease are diagnosed annually and it kills an estimated 275,000 women around the world every year.
The lecture is sponsored by the Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering. Its focus this year is of particular relevance to the work of La Trobe’s Department of Biochemistry which specialises in protein chemistry, molecular and cell biology, immunology and drug and vaccine development.
The Department has 14 research groups comprising some 20 postdoctoral fellows and more than 40 postgraduate students. It attracts more than $4 million annually in research funds.
Members of the Department are also part of the Cooperative Research Centres for Diagnostics and for Vaccine Technology and the Centre of Excellence in Coherent X-ray Science.
